In a bid to enhance urban walkability and provide sustainable solutions for residents, Dubai introduces a groundbreaking initiative allowing commuters to borrow umbrellas for free using their nol cards. This innovative service, launched by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in collaboration with UmbraCity, aims to mitigate the inconvenience caused by unexpected rain or harsh sunlight.
The ‘smart umbrella service’, currently operational at Al Ghubaiba Bus and Metro stations, offers commuters a convenient way to shield themselves from the elements. Users simply need to tap their nol card on the machine attached to the designated screen to access the umbrellas provided by UmbraCity.
Khaled Al Awadhi, Director for Transportation Systems at RTA’s Public Transport Agency, highlighted the importance of this initiative in fostering vibrant, healthy, and inclusive communities across Dubai. By promoting the use of smart umbrellas, which are free of charge when leased using the nol card, the RTA and UmbraCity are aligning with the emirate’s vision of creating a ’20-minute city’, where daily necessities are within easy reach through walking or biking.
The partnership between RTA and UmbraCity underscores their shared commitment to advancing sustainable urban mobility and improving the overall livability of cities. As the service undergoes a three-month test run at Al Ghubaiba stations, its success will be evaluated for potential expansion to other locations, further contributing to Dubai’s reputation as a forward-thinking and inclusive metropolis.
